09/16/2010 - Feelin' Alright

 As with many of you, my work week kicks off on Monday and this week I'm preparing for a Harvest Moon Celebration to be held next week. It hasn't been my intention to miss three days of posting a song ... it just happened.  This week has entirely flown away from me and I can't believe it's already Friday Eve!!!!!

09/13/2010 An Ocho-rific Cover - Mr. Blue Sky - Lily Allen

As mentioned in this morning's blog, Lily Allen covered ELO's Mr. Blue Sky.

I was completely unfamiliar with Lily Allen until one evening in the past year when a dear friend and I were spending an evening in our lounge clothes with laptops on the kitchen table chatting music.  She pulled up a song called Smile by Lily Allen.

09/05/2010 - Come Sail Away - Styx - 1977

A Note From the Author:
I did FULLY intend to get this posted before midnight of last night and the evening got away from me.
It's my goal to have these written ahead so that I can just choose the song, add some "daily" thoughts and post them every

morning at 6am like clockwork.  I promise, we're almost there :)

For those of you who are reading along on a regular basis, I'm open to your suggestions, thoughts and feedback regarding the Ocho-rific Song o the Day and things you'd like to see featured ... you can address them to
kjackson808@comcast.net. Please put "Ocho-rific", "Song of the day", etc in the subject line.

I do want to assure you that the Ocho-rific Song o the Day will return to it's usual WIDE variety of music just as soon as my "Styx Fever" has worn off.  :)   In fact, I'll go ahead and promise you now that tomorrow WON'T be Styx.  For those of you who can't get enough of Styx, please don't panic ... we'll revisit them soon ... :)

8/31/2010 - Tues. - the Middle of the Road - the Pretenders

today's
Ocho-rific Song o the Day...

Middle of the Road
the Pretenders
1983
(I have a descrepancy over here ... 1983, 1984 - I'm not sure...I'll "fact check" it later.)

::from SongMeanings.net::
Lyrics - version 1

THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IS TRYING TO FIND ME
I'M STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF LIFE WITH MY PLANS BEHIND ME
WELL I GOT A SMILE FOR EVERYONE I MEET
AS LONG AS YOU DON'T TRY DRAGGING MY BAY
OR DROPPING THE BOMB ON MY STREET
NOW COME ON BABY
GET IN THE ROAD
OH COME ON NOW
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, YEAH
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD YOU SEE THE DARNDEST THINGS
LIKE FAT GUYS DRIVING 'ROUND IN JEEPS THROUGH THE CITY
WEARING BIG DIAMOND RINGS AND SILK SUITS
PAST CORRUGATED TIN SHACKS FULL UP WITH KIDS
OH MAN I DON'T MEAN A HAMPSTEAD NURSERY
WHEN YOU OWN A BIG CHUNK OF THE BLOODY THIRD WORLD
THE BABIES JUST COME WITH THE SCENERY
OH COME ON BABY
GET IN THE ROAD
OH COME ON NOW

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, YEAH
ONE...TWO...THREE...FOUR...
THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IS NO PRIVATE CUL-DE-SAC
I CAN'T GET FROM THE CAB TO THE CURB
WITHOUT SOME LITTLE JERK ON MY BACK
DON'T HARASS ME, CAN'T YOU TELL
I'M GOING HOME, I'M TIRED AS HELL
I'M NOT THE CAT I USED TO BE
I GOT A KID, I'M THIRTY-THREE
BABY, GET IN THE ROAD

COME ON NOW
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD
YEAH

::from ArtistFacts.com::

Hynde was a Freshman at Kent State University in 1970,
and was protesting when the National Guard killed 4 students. She left and never went back to college.

((editor's note:  It's a good thing the NG was there to guard everyone from the
CARDBOARD SIGNS that were being used to protest ...

that could've been a real disaster ............))

Any of you young whippersnappers who doodle on your notebook in history and aren't familiar with "Kent State" can click
HERE to read the WIKI on it.I've pasted some of the shocking details below:

**the guardsmen fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis.**

**There was a significant national response to the shootings: hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools closed throughout the United States due to a student strike of four million students, and the event further affected the public opinion – at an already socially contentious time – over the role of the United States in the Vietnam War.**

**The shootings killed four students and wounded nine. Two of the four students killed, Allison Krause and Jeffrey Miller, had participated in the protest, and the other two, Sandra Scheuer and William Knox Schroeder, had been walking from one class to the next at the time of their deaths. Schroeder was also a member of the campus ROTC chapter. Of those wounded, none was closer than 71 feet to the guardsmen. Of those killed, the nearest (Miller) was 265 feet away, and their average distance from the guardsmen was 345 feet.**

::from SongFacts.com::

In the lyrics, Hynde mentions she's "Got a kid." She was raising her daughter, Natalie,
as a single mother after leaving the father, Ray Davies from the Kinks.

::WIKI "FACTS"::
Appears on The Pretenders' album Learning to Crawl.

It peaked at #19 on the US pop singles chart and
#2 on the US mainstream rock chart in January 1984, where it stayed for four weeks.

The band has experienced drug-related deaths of the members, and numerous subsequent personnel changes have taken place over the years, with Hynde as the sole continual member.

8/30/2010 - Monday - Grand Illusion - Styx

today's
Ocho-rific Song o the Day...
Grand Illusion
Styx

1977

::from
SongMeanings.net::

Welcome to the Grand illusion

Come on in and see what's happening
Pay the price, get your tickets for the show

The stage is set, the band starts playing
Suddenly your heart is pounding
Wishing secretly you were a star.
But don't be fooled by the radio
The TV or the magazines

They show you photographs of how your life should be

But they're just someone else's fantasy

So if you think your life is complete confusion

Because you never win the game

Just remember that it's a Grand illusion
And deep inside we're all the same.
We're all the same...

So if you think your life is complete confusion

Because your neighbors got it made

Just remember that it's a Grand illusion

And deep inside we're all the same.

We're all the same...

America spells competition, join us in our blind ambition
Get yourself a brand new motor car

Someday soon we'll stop to ponder what on Earth's this spell we're under
We made the grade and still we wonder who the hell we are

1981

1996

2009

::from SongFacts.com::

The album The Grand Illusion was released on July 7, 1977,(7-7-77),

::from ArtistFacts.com::
DeYoung and the Panozzos formed the band as The Tradewinds.
They played local bars while they went to Chicago State University.

::WIKI "FACTS"::

Twin brothers Chuck and John Panozzo first got together with their neighbor Dennis DeYoung in 1961 in the Roseland section of the south side of Chicago, eventually taking the band name "The Tradewinds".

August 28th, 2010 - Run Runaway - Slade - 1983

Good morning and Happy Saturday, Cats, Kittens and little dahlings!!
You can thank Mary 6-name for this Ocho-rific extravaganza about running away!!

We've both been dying to take off on a Thelma & Louise adventure ... however we do not plan to shoot out any police radios or anything like that on our adventure. Anywho, we're running away in just a tad over 83 days and I'm terribly excited!

August 27th, 2010 - Don't Look Back - Boston

::Yesterday, on the Ocho-rific Song o the Day::

.......................**insert "flashback waviness" here**......................
Bravo for the soundtracks of John Hughes' films!!
I couldn't find any song facts on this one and I'm running a little too late this morning
to go on a hunt, but what a great song ...
the lyrics of which hold a clue for tomorrow's
Ocho-rific Song o the Day!!
