::Extra Goodies:: John Lennon

::Extra Goodies::

It's entirely possible that Watching the Wheels this morning got your Lennon engine revving so that you don't know what to do about it ...
Well, Here ya go!

The dandy thing about the links below is that they are my affiliate links.
What that basically means is that if you follow the link below and buy a concert poster at Wolfgang's Vault; I get commission on the sale.   You can, of course just go to WolfgangsVault.com and purchase - however I don't make anything off of those sales and I'm trying to build an empire over here, remember? :)

11/28/2010 - ::Extra Goodies:: - On This Day in Rock History .. Rick Allen of Def Leppard

I think any music fan is familiar with the jest of the story of Rick Allen, drummer of Def Leppard.

I learned many new tidbits while watching a BBC documentary the other night and a few other goodies I found on the grand ole YouTube.  I didn't realize that Rick Allen was only 15 years old when he joined Def Leppard.  That ... by the way ... was on this date in 1978.

In Thyme In A Bottle: Memories and Recipes of Croce's Restaurants (April; $24.00; hardcover), the title a loving reference to Jim Croce's hit song "Time in a Bottle," Ingrid shares these recipes and recollections for the first time.

8/31/2010 - Tues. - the Middle of the Road - the Pretenders

today's
Ocho-rific Song o the Day...

Middle of the Road
the Pretenders
1983
(I have a descrepancy over here ... 1983, 1984 - I'm not sure...I'll "fact check" it later.)

::from SongMeanings.net::
Lyrics - version 1

THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IS TRYING TO FIND ME
I'M STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF LIFE WITH MY PLANS BEHIND ME
WELL I GOT A SMILE FOR EVERYONE I MEET
AS LONG AS YOU DON'T TRY DRAGGING MY BAY
OR DROPPING THE BOMB ON MY STREET
NOW COME ON BABY
GET IN THE ROAD
OH COME ON NOW
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, YEAH
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD YOU SEE THE DARNDEST THINGS
LIKE FAT GUYS DRIVING 'ROUND IN JEEPS THROUGH THE CITY
WEARING BIG DIAMOND RINGS AND SILK SUITS
PAST CORRUGATED TIN SHACKS FULL UP WITH KIDS
OH MAN I DON'T MEAN A HAMPSTEAD NURSERY
WHEN YOU OWN A BIG CHUNK OF THE BLOODY THIRD WORLD
THE BABIES JUST COME WITH THE SCENERY
OH COME ON BABY
GET IN THE ROAD
OH COME ON NOW

IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, YEAH
ONE...TWO...THREE...FOUR...
THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IS NO PRIVATE CUL-DE-SAC
I CAN'T GET FROM THE CAB TO THE CURB
WITHOUT SOME LITTLE JERK ON MY BACK
DON'T HARASS ME, CAN'T YOU TELL
I'M GOING HOME, I'M TIRED AS HELL
I'M NOT THE CAT I USED TO BE
I GOT A KID, I'M THIRTY-THREE
BABY, GET IN THE ROAD

COME ON NOW
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD
YEAH

::from ArtistFacts.com::

Hynde was a Freshman at Kent State University in 1970,
and was protesting when the National Guard killed 4 students. She left and never went back to college.

((editor's note:  It's a good thing the NG was there to guard everyone from the
CARDBOARD SIGNS that were being used to protest ...

that could've been a real disaster ............))

Any of you young whippersnappers who doodle on your notebook in history and aren't familiar with "Kent State" can click
HERE to read the WIKI on it.I've pasted some of the shocking details below:

**the guardsmen fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis.**

**There was a significant national response to the shootings: hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools closed throughout the United States due to a student strike of four million students, and the event further affected the public opinion – at an already socially contentious time – over the role of the United States in the Vietnam War.**

**The shootings killed four students and wounded nine. Two of the four students killed, Allison Krause and Jeffrey Miller, had participated in the protest, and the other two, Sandra Scheuer and William Knox Schroeder, had been walking from one class to the next at the time of their deaths. Schroeder was also a member of the campus ROTC chapter. Of those wounded, none was closer than 71 feet to the guardsmen. Of those killed, the nearest (Miller) was 265 feet away, and their average distance from the guardsmen was 345 feet.**

::from SongFacts.com::

In the lyrics, Hynde mentions she's "Got a kid." She was raising her daughter, Natalie,
as a single mother after leaving the father, Ray Davies from the Kinks.

::WIKI "FACTS"::
Appears on The Pretenders' album Learning to Crawl.

It peaked at #19 on the US pop singles chart and
#2 on the US mainstream rock chart in January 1984, where it stayed for four weeks.

The band has experienced drug-related deaths of the members, and numerous subsequent personnel changes have taken place over the years, with Hynde as the sole continual member.

8/30/2010 - Monday - Grand Illusion - Styx

today's
Ocho-rific Song o the Day...
Grand Illusion
Styx

1977

::from
SongMeanings.net::

Welcome to the Grand illusion

Come on in and see what's happening
Pay the price, get your tickets for the show

The stage is set, the band starts playing
Suddenly your heart is pounding
Wishing secretly you were a star.
But don't be fooled by the radio
The TV or the magazines

They show you photographs of how your life should be

But they're just someone else's fantasy

So if you think your life is complete confusion

Because you never win the game

Just remember that it's a Grand illusion
And deep inside we're all the same.
We're all the same...

So if you think your life is complete confusion

Because your neighbors got it made

Just remember that it's a Grand illusion

And deep inside we're all the same.

We're all the same...

America spells competition, join us in our blind ambition
Get yourself a brand new motor car

Someday soon we'll stop to ponder what on Earth's this spell we're under
We made the grade and still we wonder who the hell we are

1981

1996

2009

::from SongFacts.com::

The album The Grand Illusion was released on July 7, 1977,(7-7-77),

::from ArtistFacts.com::
DeYoung and the Panozzos formed the band as The Tradewinds.
They played local bars while they went to Chicago State University.

::WIKI "FACTS"::

Twin brothers Chuck and John Panozzo first got together with their neighbor Dennis DeYoung in 1961 in the Roseland section of the south side of Chicago, eventually taking the band name "The Tradewinds".

Tuesday - 8/24/2010 An Ocho-rific Cover Tune - that'll show YOU, David Bowie...

Modern Love
David Bowie
1983

David Bowie and his people don't want me to embed his video,
so you can click here to open it in a new window on youtube. =)

And by the way, David Bowie ... should you or your people happen to wonder back over here to my Ocho-rific little world (after you notice the spike in views on your 27ish year old song!!) .. please note that it's a total pain in the arse to not be able to embed a video.  Good Grief!! Natalie Merchant is the worst!! She just wears me out with her anti-online-socialness.  For the love of Peter, Paul and Mary ... it's MARKETING, you dingle-dwarfs!!
It's for the benefit of you!!

The Ocho-riffic Song of the Day, A La Peter Gabriel

At one time I made a pretty good run of posting an Upbeat hit of the day on Myspace. Myspace seems so vintage now.  I still log on once every week or two ... and honestly, still prefer the format of myspace where creative tweaks such as page design and music are concerned...but everyone's on the doggone FB now ... so I spend most of my social networking time there.
