10/01/2010 - The General - Dispatch

today's
Ocho-rific
Song o the Day...

The General
Dispatch

You folks may be a little bewildered ... this is a little new-ish for me, I know...but I abso-smurfin'-lutely LOVE this song!  Last night after a fabulous Thursday evening of visiting with the girls under the evening sky my dahling friend and I hopped in her car so that should could drop me off on her way to her abode.

Her car is mp3 capable ... as she scanned her mp3 player she mentioned that she was looking for a song by a band called Dispatch.  Now usually when she mentions a band, I have no idea who she's talking about....but THIS time, I vaguely remembered a song I loved when I ran across it on MySpace called The General.

I asked her, "The General?!"
She slapped the steering wheel and squealed "Yes!!" with delight....  We began to chat about how we'd each come across the song.  I think she said she found it on Pandora. ...anywho, she finally found it and we sang our heads off all the way home.... well, until she accidently pushed some snazzy little button and moved it to another song.
It's a great song, do enjoy it!!

::from SongMeanings.net::
There was a decorated General with a heart of gold
That likened him to all the stories he told,
Of past battles won and lost
And legends of old
A seasoned veteran in his own time

On the battlefield he gained respectful fame
With many medals of bravery and stripes to his name
He grew a beard as soon as he could to cover the scars on his face
And always urged his men on

But on the eve of great battle with the infantry in dream
The Old General tossed in his sleep and wrestled with its meaning
He awoke from the night to tell what he had seen
And walked slowly out of his tent

All the men held tall with their chests in the air
With courage in their blood and a fire in their stare
It was a gray morning and they were all wondering how they would fare
Till the old general told them to go home

He said: I have seen the others
And I have discovered
That this fight is not worth fighting
And I have seen their mothers
And I will no other, to follow me where I'm going
So

Take a shower, shine your shoes
You got no time to lose
You are young men, you must be living
Take a shower, shine your shoes
You got no time to lose
You are young men, you must be living
Go now you are forgiven

But the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders
Not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders
The General said he would do his own duty but he would extend it no further
The men can go as they please

Not a man moved their eyes gazed straight ahead,
Till one by one they stepped back and not a word was said
And the old general was left with his own words echoing in his head
He then prepared to fight

He said: I have seen the others
And I have discovered
That this fight is not worth fighting
No, and I see their mothers
and I will no other
to follow me where I'm going
So
Take a shower shine your shoes
You got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Yea
Take a shower shine your shoes
You got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living
Go now you are forgiven

Yea

Yea

Oww

Huh

Yea

Go now you are forgiving
Go now you are forgiving
Go now you are forgiving
Go

Yea

Go now you are forgiving
Go now you are forgiving
Go now you are forgiving
Go
Go now you are forgiving
Go now you are forgiving
Go now you are forgiving

Got to me
Got to me
Got to me hey.

::WIKI "FACTS"::
*
This song tells a story about a brilliant and battle-torn old general, who has a dream in which he realizes the futility of the war he is fighting. He then attempts to persuade his men that they do not have to participate in the battle, but that he would fulfill the job he had sworn to do.[1]

He wants them to leave and live a full life.[2]

*Dispatch was an American indie/roots folk jam band formed at Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont. They were active from 1996 to 2002, and have come together three times for reunion concerts, first in 2004, again in 2007, and a third time in 2009.
Until next time...
