::from SongMeanings.net::
I'M STANDING IN THE MIDDLE OF LIFE WITH MY PLANS BEHIND ME
WELL I GOT A SMILE FOR EVERYONE I MEET
AS LONG AS YOU DON'T TRY DRAGGING MY BAY
OR DROPPING THE BOMB ON MY STREET
NOW COME ON BABY
GET IN THE ROAD
OH COME ON NOW
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, YEAH
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD YOU SEE THE DARNDEST THINGS
LIKE FAT GUYS DRIVING 'ROUND IN JEEPS THROUGH THE CITY
WEARING BIG DIAMOND RINGS AND SILK SUITS
PAST CORRUGATED TIN SHACKS FULL UP WITH KIDS
OH MAN I DON'T MEAN A HAMPSTEAD NURSERY
WHEN YOU OWN A BIG CHUNK OF THE BLOODY THIRD WORLD
THE BABIES JUST COME WITH THE SCENERY
OH COME ON BABY
GET IN THE ROAD
OH COME ON NOW
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD, YEAH
ONE...TWO...THREE...FOUR...
THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD IS NO PRIVATE CUL-DE-SAC
I CAN'T GET FROM THE CAB TO THE CURB
WITHOUT SOME LITTLE JERK ON MY BACK
DON'T HARASS ME, CAN'T YOU TELL
I'M GOING HOME, I'M TIRED AS HELL
I'M NOT THE CAT I USED TO BE
I GOT A KID, I'M THIRTY-THREE
BABY, GET IN THE ROAD
COME ON NOW
IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD
YEAH
See
Lyrics - version 2!

Hynde was a Freshman at Kent State University in 1970,
and was protesting when the National Guard killed 4 students. She left and never went back to college.
((editor's note: It's a good thing the NG was there to guard everyone from the
CARDBOARD SIGNS that were being used to protest ...
that could've been a real disaster ............))
Any of you young whippersnappers who doodle on your notebook in history and aren't familiar with "Kent State" can click HERE to read the WIKI on it.I've pasted some of the shocking details below:
**the guardsmen fired 67 rounds over a period of 13 seconds, killing four students and wounding nine others, one of whom suffered permanent paralysis.**
**There was a significant national response to the shootings: hundreds of universities, colleges, and high schools closed throughout the United States due to a student strike of four million students, and the event further affected the public opinion – at an already socially contentious time – over the role of the United States in the Vietnam War.**
**The shootings killed four students and wounded nine. Two of the four students killed, Allison Krause and Jeffrey Miller, had participated in the protest, and the other two, Sandra Scheuer and William Knox Schroeder, had been walking from one class to the next at the time of their deaths. Schroeder was also a member of the campus ROTC chapter. Of those wounded, none was closer than 71 feet to the guardsmen. Of those killed, the nearest (Miller) was 265 feet away, and their average distance from the guardsmen was 345 feet.**

In the lyrics, Hynde mentions she's "Got a kid." She was raising her daughter, Natalie,
as a single mother after leaving the father, Ray Davies from the Kinks.
::WIKI "FACTS"::
Appears on The Pretenders' album Learning to Crawl.
It peaked at #19 on the US pop singles chart and
#2 on the US mainstream rock chart in January 1984, where it stayed for four weeks.
The band has experienced drug-related deaths of the members, and numerous subsequent personnel changes have taken place over the years, with Hynde as the sole continual member.
